A new survey shows that Democrats are as anti-gun as Republicans think.
According to a YouGov poll, 81% of Democrats want all semi-automatic weapons banned, compared to just 47% of independents and 37% of Republicans. This goes beyond many existing proposals in Congress—which seek to ban “assault weapons” but not other semi-automatic weapons like handguns and hunting rifles.
YouGov then asked if the polltakers favored banning all weapons, including handguns and revolvers—something that was declared unconstitutional several years ago by the Supreme Court.
Americans are overwhelmingly against banning all firearms—but Democrats are split, with 44% saying that all guns should be outlawed, and 46% saying they should not.
Democrats are also evenly split 39% to 41% on whether the Second Amendment should be repealed—a losing proposition with most of the population: only 21% of Americans overall think the right to bear arms should be stricken from the Constitution.
