President Trump told aides that they should not publicize the fact that the Administration is supplying weapons to certain rebels in the Ukraine. The effort is an attempt to bolster support for pro-Ukranian groups, fighting Russian backed separatist militias in the area.
On Thursday, NBC News reported that Trump was concerned that noisily promoting the US’s actions in the region could needlessly aggrieve Vladimir Putin.
“He doesn’t want us to bring it up,” the White House advisor explained, “It is not something he wants to talk about.”
Trump has confronted investigation for his evident hesitance to openly scrutinize Moscow and Putin. In any case, authorities disclosed to NBC News that Trump has taken a harder line toward Russia in private.
Critics have used this new information to point out that Trump’s delicate way to deal with Putin may have dark and sinister roots, and point to alleged Russian interference with the 2016 election as the proof.
