Far-left New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is calling on protesters to “occupy” the nation’s infrastructure–including airports and border crossings, in order to protest immigration enforcement.
“We have to occupy all of it,” said Ocasio-Cortez, during an interview with Democracy Now! “We need to occupy every airport. We need to occupy every border. We need to occupy every ICE office until those kids are back with their parents, period.”
She also sought to clarify her position on “abolishing ICE”–which has become a left-wing rallying cry since her shock primary victory last month.
“First of all, ICE is not [U.S. Customs and Border Protection],” she said. “When we talk about abolishing ICE, we’re talking about ending family detention. We’re talking about ending an agency and ending a practice and a structure that is not accountable to the U.S. Department of Justice, that often takes on things that look a lot like enforcement activities.”
“We have to show people that we’re willing to walk the walk and put our money where our mouth is,” she added.
Ocasio-Cortez, who just several months ago was working at a bartender in New York City, stunned the political world when she beat 10-term Democratic incument Rep. Joe Crowley, one of the most powerful Democrats in Washington.
But, as Ocasio-Cortez drags the party alarmingly far to the left, other Democrats are beginning to sound the alarm–with a number of top Democrats going on the record to warn her that she was making enemies among her party.
