The military wanted to get some money to help fund the Contras in Nicaragua and to try and free some hostages in Lebanon. Congress didn’t approve of the course that they wanted to take so they did it on their own.
They sold guns to Iran, which wasn’t allowed, and used the money to pay for the Contras to fight the government in Nicaragua. All this was done without Congress knowing, but guess what. They found out. Dozens of people got in trouble and were indicted, and some were even charged. Then, in the last days of the George HW Bush’s term as president, he decided to pardon all the remaining guilty parties. |
