A 19-year-old illegal immigrant was arrested after killing three relatives in Ft. Myers, Florida.
Brian Omar Hyde has been charged with the murder of his pregnant cousin, Scarlett Pitts, 17; her 19-year-old boyfriend; and Pitts’ mother, Dorla, 37, who is also Hyde’s aunt. All three of his victims were stabbed to death in the head and neck–and the scene was so grisly that it shocked even veteran cops.
“All homicides are normally violent but even for us this scene was what we considered almost unimaginable,” said Lt. Matt Sands, a veteran police officer who came to the scene.
No motive has been established for the murder of Pitts and her boyfriend, but Hyde apparently turned his knife on his aunt because she walked into the room while he was committing the first two murders. She was on the phone with her husband at the time, who said he heard her scream, “Brian! What happened here? What happened?” before the line went dead.
Hyde’s aunt had been helping her nephew obtain a high school equivalency diploma in the United States.
Hyde, who is in the United States illegally from Belize, has a long history of criminal violence in his native country.
He fled Belize initially because he faced charges of assaulting a police officer last year. He was found guilty in absentia and given a 6-month jail sentence.
He also robbed a Belize cell phone store in 2013, and has been a suspect in two other murders.
After fleeing the scene, police caught up with Hyde when they pulled him over for a traffic violation. At the time of his arrest, he was barefoot and covered in human blood.
Hyde now faces three counts of second degree murder, and one count of killing an unborn child by injury to the mother.
