An Indiana woman has provided a kick-ass alternative to handguns or rifles as home defense.
Karen Dolley, 43, saw an intruder in the hallway of her home sprang into action. She punched him several times in the face and while he was down, then retrieved a large Japanese combat sword. This is a 100% true story.
Apparently the weapon was not just for decoration. In fact, Dolley commented that, “It is 440C stainless steel, it has an edge and it will cut,”. She has been trained how to use the sword and said that her medieval training kicked in when she felt threatened.
Like something from a Quentin Tarantino film, Dolley held the sword to the intruder’s throat with one hand and dialed 911 with the other. She kept the weapon in place until authorities arrived.
Police arrested the man, who said he was “hiding from someone” and that’s why he had broken in to Dolley’s residence. The 30 year old, Jacob Wessel, gave himself up without a fight and even apologized.
Officials said that he was high on an unknown drug when he broke in. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation before being remanded into police custody. He was charged with residential entry. Although it is probably safe to assume he wishes that he had chosen another residence.
“If he would have behaved in a slightly different manner he would not have gotten out of here alive,” said Dolley. Wessel is lucky that he did not do anything further to awaken the woman’s inner samurai. There is no question as to whether or not he would have lived to tell the tale.
