A top Democrat in Congress and already-declared 2020 presidential candidate, Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.), thinks the U.S. should use nuclear weapons to exterminate gun owners who won’t voluntarily relinquish their firearms.
Swalwell wrote an article calling for a ban on “military-style semiautomatic assault weapons”—but he plans to take it one step further.
Not only would Swalwell ban weapons, but he’d “buy them back [and] go after resisters.”
So basically @RepSwalwell wants a war. Because that’s what you would get. You’re outta your fucking mind if you think I’ll give up my rights and give the gov all the power. https://t.co/bK1GVyjFej

Someone on Twitter retweeted Swalwell’s article, saying there’d be a “war” if the federal government tried to take everyone’s guns away forcibly. Swalwell agreed their would be—and suggested using nuclear weapons against gun owners who refused to relinquish their weapons.
“And it would be a short war my friend,” Swalwell replied, via Twitter. “The government has nukes. Too many of them. But they’re legit. I’m sure if we talked we could find common ground to protect our families and communities.”
The shocking threat received widespread backlash—forcing Swalwell to later claim he was being “sarcastic.”
