Social Conservatives Start the Trump Attack

Following the GOP presidential debate in Charleston, South Carolina, Conservative HQ, a publication of social conservative stalwart Richard Viguerie, came out swinging with their article “Trump’s Big Reveal.”

The article was written by CHQ’s editor George Rasley.

The “Big Reveal” was a weak attempt to paint the GOP front-runner as a typical politician rather than a “selfless patriot.”

Trump was referred to as a flip-flopper, “clownish” and that “Trump didn’t really care about the Constitution – he just wants to win.”

Within the article, Rasley also made a misguided attempt to downplay Cruz’s citizenship status saying,  “And as Senator Cruz pointed out, if one adopted the “two parent” position of the “birthers” who occasionally comment on these pages, Trump himself would be ineligible because his mother was a British subject, likewise Senator Rubio and Governor Bobby Jindal would also be disqualified.”

The statement is laughable on two fronts.

First, there is no argument that a child born on U.S. Soil is a Natural Born Citizen.

Second, Trump’s assertion on Cruz’s eligibility does not pertain the citizenship of Cruz’s parents, but the place of his birth.

Texas Senator Rafael “Ted” Cruz” was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

To obtain U.S. Citizenship, Cruz’s parents had to apply for a birth certificate with the U.S. State Department before he reached the age of 18.

Cruz’s family did not relocated to the United States until 1974 when young Rafael was three-years-old.  Cruz’s father did not become a citizen until 2005.

ConservativeHQ’s Chairman Richard Viguerie has already endorsed Cruz for the GOP nomination.

In his endorsement, Viguerie laid out these reasons for his support:

To conservatives who continue to window shop I say, “What are you waiting for? In Ted Cruz conservatives have a candidate that’s everything we want.”

1.) Ted Cruz is the best presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan.

2.) Ted Cruz is a fighter.

3.) Ted Cruz is a leader on our issues.

4.) Ted Cruz is one of us – a movement conservative.

5.) Ted Cruz’s commitment to governing according to the Constitution is unquestioned.

6.) Even establishment commentators are saying he’s running a brilliant campaign.

While Viguerie is correct on his final point, the other selling points are vague and arguable.

Cruz only became a conservative after winning his senate seat three years ago.  Previously he had consulted for George W. Bush and his wife, a Goldman Sachs investment banker, is a member of the secretive Council on Foreign Relations that promotes globalization.  CFR has been criticized by the John Birch society as, “conspiring to build a one world government.”

To state that Rafael “Ted” Cruz is the “best presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan” is a stretch given Cruz’s lack of experience in office or the private sector.  At best, Cruz is an unknown.

However, facts rarely apply in the world of politics.

Social conservatives have no other option but to support Cruz because as Duck Dynasty’s Phil Robertson drawls, “He’s one of us.”

Trump, Rubio and Bush have not pandered to the social conservative vote.  That role has been left to Cruz.

Trump remains the only man standing between Cruz and a coronation ceremony at the upcoming GOP nominating convention.

Expect the attacks on Trump to escalate to number “11” on the shrieking scale.
