Kim Kardashian Attacks Gun Laws, Gets Them Laughably Wrong

Reality TV star, Kim Kardashian, made an impassioned plea to reform gun laws in America–except she got the laws completely wrong.

After a 48-year-old man named David Conley killed his ex, Valerie Jackson, along with her partner and her six kids (one of which was Conley’s child), Kardashian decided something had be done.

She took to Twitter–and made the target of her rant online firearm sales.

“Have u heard of the heart breaking story about David Conley who slaughter his ex girlfriend & her entire family! Her 6 kids, husband & her!” Kardashian asked, via Twitter (grammar is her own.)

“He purchased the gun & ammo ONLINE! How is it so easy to purchase guns online!!! Does this not sicken you? No background checks needed!!!!!”

She continued: “These gun safety laws have to change! This poor woman was tied up & saw every child of hers & husband get executed over 10 hours!”

The murder of Valerie Jackson and her family was, in fact, horrific–Kardashian has it right when she later says that her thoughts and prayers go out to the victims’ family.

But the big problem with Kardashian’s rant is that, well, she got the gun laws completely wrong.

In fact, a large number of laws deal exactly with guns purchased over the internet.

If a gun is purchased from another state, for example, it must be shipped to a local federally-licensed dealer–where the buyer must go through the same sort of background checks that all gun owners must go through.

And if a gun owner buys through a federally-licensed firearm dealer, they need a background check for that, too.

It’s actually illegal to have a private website that offers guns for sale. All sites must be monitored by the federal government.

Kardashian’s claim that a person can easily buy guns online without any sort of government intervention is absolutely false–and it’s sad that she exploits a tragedy like Valerie Jackson’s murder to spread misinformation about gun control.
