A federal judge in California temporarily blocked the Trump Administration’s plans to roll back the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
In addition, Judge William Alsup said the Trump Administration must also resume processing renewal applications from current DACA recipients, though new applications are still not permitted.
The White House responded with fire, calling the decision “outrageous.”
“We find this decision to be outrageous, especially in light of the President’s successful bipartisan meeting with House and Senate members at the White House on the same day,” said White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, referencing the televised meeting Trump had with lawmakers from both parties.
In that meeting, Trump offered support for a comprehensive, bipartisan immigration deal. He also reiterated his support for those currently covered by DACA to be allowed to stay in the country, so long as Congress was willing to go for enhanced border security and changes to family-based “chain migration.”
