An illegal immigrant from Haiti has been arrested–after being accused of brutally gunning down a Florida police officer.

Wisner Desmaret, 29, is an illegal immigrant from Haiti. He now faces eight felonies, including attempted first-degree murder, after critically wounding Fort Myers Police Officer Adam Jobbers-Miller, also 29.

According to Fort Myers Police Chief Derrick Diggs, officers received to a 911 call on Saturday night from a local gas station on Saturday night, claiming that Desmaret was engaged in a scuffle with a group of men.

When police arrived at the scene, Desmaret turned on the cops–opening fire on them and hitting and injuring Jobbers-Miller. Jobbers-Miller was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery and, despite severe injuries, is expected to survive.

Desmaret was also wounded by police, and taken into custody.

Desmaret has a long rap sheet already, including a 2011 arrest after another standoff with police and a long list of trespassing charges. Despite being in the country illegally, he was never turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

After wounding Jobbers-Miller, however, ICE has vowed not to make the same mistake twice. If Desmaret is ever released from jail–not a certainty, considering the severity of the charges–he’ll face deportation.

And ICE spokesman reported to the media: “ICE filed a detainer on Wisner Desmaret, 29, a citizen and national of Haiti on July 22, after his arrest by the Fort Myers Police Department on charges including attempted murder of a law enforcement officer.”
