Call it the Kanye Effect: support among African-Americans for President Donald Trump has doubled in just one week, according to a new Reuters poll.
According to a Reuters poll conducted on April 22, Trump’s approval among African-Americans was 8.9 percent. By April 29, his support had jumped to 16.5 percent.
The gain was even more pronounced among black men. On April 22, 11 percent of black men approved of Trump. On April 29, 22 percent did. In addition, the number of black men who said they had “mixed feelings” about Trump jumped from 1.5 percent to 7.1 percent.
The leap in support comes after rapper Kanye West announced that he supported President Trump and conservative ideology. West has received a huge backlash from the left for professing his “love” for the President and posting a photo in a red “Make America Great Again” hat. That prompted a number of celebrities to leap to his defense, including Chance the Rapper, another black man, who tweeted: “Black people don’t have to be Democrats.”
Despite the backlash among liberals, it’s clear that Kanye West is slowly beginning to win more black support for President Trump.
