USDA: “Eat Expired Food” to Stop Waste!

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has had it up to here with wasted food. Now they want Americans to eat expired food–even if it’s 18 months past the expiration date.

Sound disgusting?

Apparently, the Agriculture Department has determined that every month, the average American wastes 36 pounds of food–21% of the available food in the United States–because we’re too cautious about those pesky expiration dates. Rather than toss food, the USDA would rather we eat it.

A recently released USDA video explains: “Many products may have a sell-by date of say April 1 but they could be good in your pantry for another 12 to 18 months. And by throwing those out, what you’re doing, is contributing to food waste in the United States.”

It might seem odd that the USDA–the government agency that regulates those expiration dates, and above all makes sure food is safe to eat–would be so concerned with Americans throwing away questionable, expired food.

Until you realize that this is a joint project between the USDA–and the EPA, which has been a key fixture in Obama’s backdoor run around Congress. Over the last six years, the EPA has attempted to ram through Obama’s far-Left environmental agenda on issues that failed in front of Congress, like cap-and-trade.

Now, the USDA–which is supposed to keep Americans safe from spoiled food–is jumping into the leftist political fray. Rather than making sure the food we eat is safe, they’re more concerned about making sure we don’t waste–even if it means eating food that’s been sitting around for years.

It’s sort of like back in 2010, when Obama told NASA that “reaching out to the Muslim world” was one of the space agency’s top priorities.

Like so many things in Obama’s federal government, it just plain doesn’t make sense.
