The State of Alabama has certified Democratic candidate Doug Jones’s Victory in the Special Senate Elections and have confirmed that he is to be the first Democrat to represent Alabama in a decade.

The certification was made by two of the senior-most Alabama officials on Thursday and came while Moore protested the results. Moore lost to Jones with almost a 1.5 percentage points and still claims that the massive fraud was responsible for Jones’s victory.

Alabama Governor, Kay Ivey, Secretary of the State, John Merrill, and the Attorney General, Steve Marshall, all signed the certification declaring Jones’s victory at 1:10 pm, making the victory official.

The official declaration brought an end to the unusual and special elections that had been in the headlines weeks before actually happening,

Moore had entered the race as a favorite, even after his controversial history of being removed from the Supreme Court bench twice, but the sexual misconduct accusations that followed him, caused him to lose in the race.

This worked in the favor of Jones who was famous for his case where he prosecuted two Ku Klux Klansmen who killed a total of four girls as they bombed a church for the black community in Birmingham, during the Civil Rights Movement. This won him great support from all his black, young, and female supporters in Alabama.

However, even after the official declaration, Moore remains to be adamant about not accepting defeat. He calls after his supporters to bear with him till the military and provisional votes to be included in the count, but soon after his campaign was accused of voter frauds and for fundraising for an election integrity project, which threatened for a vote recount.

Moore’s campaign filed a very last minute appeal to the court where it was requested to hold the certification as a larger investigation was done into the fraud allegations.

Moore also raised more accusations in the court about several incidents where the officials found very legitimate explanations for the conduct.

All these allegations were turned down by the court.

Jones is now set to become the first Democratic senator from Alabama, since Senator Howell Heflin had retired after 1996 elections.

“I am looking forward to going to work for the people of Alabama in the New Year,” Jones said in a statement shortly after the certification.

“As I said on election night, our victory marks a new chapter for our state and the nation. I will be an independent voice and work to find common ground with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get Washington back on track and fight to make our country a better place for all.”
